Understand LSI and Its Colors

The Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) measures your water's balance. The number will appear color-coded at the bottom of the calculator:

  • Green (0.00 to +0.30): Perfect balance. Water is stable and won’t cause damage or scaling. Aim for this!
  • Yellow (-0.30 to -0.01): Acceptable, but not ideal. Water is close to balance. The pH will likely rise to improve the balance.
  • Red (≤ -0.31): Aggressive water that is low in calcium. It can damage pool surfaces and equipment.
  • Purple (≥ +0.31): Over-saturated water with too much calcium, causing scaling.

How to Use the Pool Water Chemistry Calculator

Step 1: Choose Input Style
At the top left, pick "Dials" to adjust the sliders or "Custom" to type in exact numbers for your readings.

Step 2: Enter Pool Volume
At the top right, enter your pool’s size in gallons. This helps calculate the correct chemical dosing.

Step 3: Input Current Water Chemistry
On the left side, enter the test results from your pool water for pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid (CYA), and total dissolved solids (TDS). These values represent the current state of your pool.

Step 4: Set Desired Water Chemistry
On the right side, adjust the numbers to reflect your target water chemistry. These should be realistic based on your pool's current conditions. The goal is to reach a green or yellow LSI value (explained below).

Step 5: Understand LSI and Its Colors

Step 6: Balance the pH Ceiling
The pH ceiling shows where your pH will naturally settle without chemical automation. Make sure the LSI stays green or acceptable yellow when the pH reaches this ceiling. This ensures long-term water stability.

Step 7: Learn More
Tap any underlined items (like Total Alkalinity, Calcium, etc.) for a detailed explanation of that factor and how it affects water balance.

Step 8: Calculate Results
Once your desired chemistry (right side) is set and the LSI is balanced, tap "Calculate" at the bottom. You’ll see a list of chemicals and amounts needed to adjust your pool water from its current state to your desired levels.

If no results show, it may be because the current and desired values are the same. Adjust the desired values slightly and try again.
